Services

She specializes in treating anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and sexual issues, drawing on years of experience and extensive training.

Dr. Tinsley has served as a mandated therapist for men charged with sexual crimes in New York City, and in 2023, she was recognized under Virginia code §19.2-300 as an expert in evaluating men charged with sexual offenses. She collaborates with state courts to assess survivors and provide evaluations.

Teaching is another facet of Dr. Tinsley’s career. As an instructor at the University of Michigan’s Sexual Health Certificate Program, she teaches “Qualitative Research Methods for Clinicians.” She was awarded a research fellowship at the California Institute of Integral Studies under Dr. Penny Harvey, focusing on sexual preferences across different orientations.

Dr. Tinsley’s peer-reviewed research on sexology-informed clinical reasoning helps clinicians to address complex emotional issues.  Her paper, “A Consensus Statement on Clinical Reasoning in Clinical Sexology” was published by Lincoln University Press’ Journal of Black Sexuality and Relationships.

As a licensed psychotherapist, university instructor, researcher, and clinical director, Dr. Shea Tinsley has dedicated her career to helping individuals overcome mental health challenges and achieve well-being.

In 2023, she presented her work at national conferences including the Association of Black Sexologists and Clinicians, the Society for Sex Therapy and Research, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. She collaborates with the London-based nonprofit, Pineapple Support, providing free or discounted therapy services to adult-film stars.

Dr. Tinsley recently published a book based on her research for families on body safety titled Safe and Sound: Be Empowered to Protect Your Body, which is available on Amazon.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Tinsley served as a field supervisor at universities across America, including Fordham University, Ohio State University, Arizona State University, and Tulane University. She also served on the board of the nonprofit CVCCN, offering free clinical supervision to counselors across Virginia.

Dr. Tinsley is the radio host of "Mental Health Minute" on WTJU 91.1 FM and the lead facilitator of the national clinical training program "How to Think Like a Sex Therapist."

Dr. Tinsley is currently the Executive Director at Addiction Recovery sytems in Charlottesville, Virginia and a recipient of Cville Weekly magazine’s annual “Best of” award under the “Best Mental Health Therapist” category.
